The governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu has warned the leadership and officers of the Hisbah Board to desist from using their position to persecute residents of the state.
At the inauguration of the Hisbah board on Thursday, Aliyu said respect for citizens fundamental human rights is paramount in executing their duties.
He urged the board to ensure that its personnel works within the ambit of the law while carrying out their responsibilities.
Also stating clearly that Hisbah was not a state police, the governor said the board was only established to make arrest and hand over its suspects to the relevant security agencies.
He warned that Islam frowns at social injustices and such should always be avoided at all times.
The governor said, “We want to sanitise our society against social vices and promote moral values and other religious affairs because Sokoto people are predominately Muslims.”
He further called for corporation between Sokoto residents and the Hisbah Board to ensure peace and tranquility in the state.
