Kenya’s economic struggles persist, with corruption being a significant contributor to the problem. While speaking at a function in Mombasa, Mudavadi highlighted the grim reality, noting that these colossal losses make up 7.8% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Prime CS called on public supply chain and procurement managers to take action and ensure that engaging in corruption becomes a high-risk endeavor.

Musalia Mudavadi’s figure of KSh 1.6 billion per day slightly contrasts with former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s estimate of KSh 2 billion per day.

Back in January 2021, during an interview with Kikuyu vernacular stations, Uhuru mentioned that Kenya was hemorrhaging KSh 2 billion daily to corruption.

“These people are on a daily basis stealing that Sh2 billion you hear people talking about. These people are deceitful,” Uhuru said while responding to a question touching on the now dead Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

The comparison between Mudavadi’s and Kenyatta’s figures is telling. While Mudavadi’s estimate is KSh 400 lower than Uhuru’s, both amounts paint a bleak picture of rampant corruption in the country.
