According to WebMD, here are some crucial tests you should consider undergoing in order to be on the safe side;

1. Fertility Test

The primary essence of marriage is to foster procreation, but such can be thrown out of the window if one partner is futile or non-reproductive.

Semen analysis, hormone testing, and pelvic ultrasound scans are all components of fertility tests that assess the health of the internal reproductive organs. It is advisable that couples carry out fertility test before walking down the Isle.

2. Genotype

Knowing your partner’s genotype, as well as yours, is very important, especially if you hope to have kids in the marriage.

The last thing you would want is to give birth to a child with sickle cell disease, but this can happen if your genotype is not compatible. See genotype chart below;

3. STDs

There are several sexually transmitted infections you need to get tested for before making proper marriage plans. While some STIs are treatable, some are untreatable and could last for a very long time.

So, it is always best to get tested beforehand. Examples of some STIs that should be done include, but are not limited to; hepatitis B and C, HIV, genital warts, syphilis, chlamydia, yeast infections,gonorrhea, etc.

4. Mental Health Status

A sound mental health of both partners is integral for a happy marriage. Some mental health conditions can be passed on to offsprings, thus it’s important for you and your potential spouse to know about them beforehand.

5. Chronic Disease Test

Any existing chronic disease can affect the outcome of pregnancy. Couples getting married should know their hypertensive and diabetic status.

6. Blood Group Test

It is also important that partners get to know their blood group. People with the same blood group can donate blood to each other in cases of emergencies.

The blood groups are A, B, AB, or O. There is also the Rhesus factor. One can either be Rhesus positive or negative. Knowing your Rhesus factor is also vital to prevent haemolytic disease which could affect your newborn child.

Marriage is a lifelong commitment, a journey that is meant to be enjoyed not endured. However, in order to avoid regrets and heartaches in the union, it is important for couples to have themselves medically checked before making things formal.
