United States, China and the crowd inside Arena Bercy were treated to the most thrilling of finishes. The battle for bragging rights at the Paris 2024 Olympics boiled down to the final event of the Games.

China topped the medal standings with 40 golds heading into the women’s basketball, but Team USA knew victory over France would see them top the table by virtue of more silver and bronze medals.

United States, China and the crowd inside Arena Bercy were treated to the most thrilling of finishes. The Americans were hot favourites; they had won 60 Olympic Games matches in a row spanning 32 years, but they were pushed to the limit by France.

With 3.8 seconds left on the clock, United States led by three. France launched the ball to star player Gabby Williams, who got her shot off and found the target. But the prospect of overtime was dashed as her foot was narrowly inside the arc.

It was ultimately disappointment for China, but they ended the final day with a gold medal courtesy of Li Wenwen in the women’s +81kg weightlifting.

While Team USA’s women’s basketball team got them over the line, Jennifer Valente did her bit on the final day with victory in the women’s omnium.
