Speaking on Sunday night, Ruto said that most people believe that he should be focused on the 2027 elections but there is more to life than the next election.

He said that Kenya needs leaders who can make the right decisions and not populist decisions.

The Head of State said populist decisions is what has put Kenya in the economic state it is currently in.

“My focus is not in 2027. My focus is transforming Kenya. There’s always a belief that people must focus on the next election. Good people there’s more than the next election, we need to do and make the right decisions for Kenya now,” Ruto said.

“If we make decisions merely because we want to be popular, that is how we get ourselves into the kind of situation our country is in.”

He went on to add that Kenyan universities are in huge debt because of the inability to make sound decisions that can get them out of such issues.

“That is how we end with our universities in so much debt because we are unable to make decisions that will get our universities out of trouble,” Ruto said.

The President spoke at KICC where he held a Town hall meeting with students and other education stakeholders to explain the new University funding model.

Unveiled on May 3, the model according to Ruto aims to ensure that all eligible students receive adequate educational financial support.

It also promotes the provision and access to quality higher education and ensures that all students are equitably and adequately supported based on their financial needs.
