The facility with a 150-bed capacity, is equipped with specialised medical equipment, including theatres, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and a High Dependency Unit (HDU), specifically designed for treating accident victims.

The facility is expected to serve more than 5 million people from the Nyanza region.

President Ruto thanked the European Union for their support in equipping the hospital.

He said the Sh500 million grant provided by the EU is crucial in realising the state-of-the-art trauma centre.

“This facility will play a critical role in providing urgent medical care to those in need, particularly accident victims,” President Ruto stated during the commissioning ceremony.

The facility was constructed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) as part of the rehabilitation of the Isebania-Kisii-Ahero road.

It is set to revolutionise healthcare in the area, targeting to assist accident victims along the busy highway while at the same time shortening the distance patients in need of specialised treatment from the area travel to get services.

The state-of-the-art equipment is set to boost capacity for Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira counties in the management of specialised cases.

This will ease pressure on Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH), and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, where most of the patients requiring specialised treatment in the area are taken.

In addition to enhancing healthcare infrastructure, President Ruto also laid the foundation stone for the construction of the 2,384-unit Lumumba Estate Affordable Housing Project within Kisumu central constituency.

The project is part of a broader initiative to build 10,000 housing units in Kisumu County, focusing on providing affordable housing options for low-income earners.
