The President was responding to calls by Kisumu leaders for creation of jobs for the youth from the region. He said the programme will be called ‘Climate Works Mashinani’ where youths will be involved in environmental conservation related activities.

“Mnataka tuanzishe mambo ya kazi ya hawa vijana hapa mtaani. Mnipatie mwezi mmoja hio kazi napanga saa hii. Baada ya mwezi mmoja tutakuwa na mpango wa Climate Works Mashinani. Mtanisaidia katika mambo ya mazingira na mambo yale mengine. Nyinyi vijana kuna kazi inakuja ya mtaani,” Ruto said.

This loosely translates to, “You want us to start work programs for these young people here. Give me one month and we will have those jobs. I am planning. After one month we will have the Climate Works Mashinani program. You will help me in environmental matters and other matters. You guys, there are jobs coming.”

The President noted that through different programmes across the country, he is creating avenues where youths can earn income.

He said that while some will earn from the Climate Works programme, others will work in affordable housing projects, digital jobs and manufacturing.

Others, he said will work in markets while others will export their labour.

The Kazi Mtaani project was started by former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration to cushion young Kenyans from the economic effects of Covid-19 pandemic.

In the project, young people who participate in a community cleaning exercise and would be paid weekly.

When Ruto was elected in 2022, he abolished the programme.

He said it was outdated and his focus will now be on housing construction and not collecting garbage.

“Kaazi Mtaani is now outdated, the Kaazi Mtaani of collecting garbage will not be the case, the building will now be our business and the first people to get jobs in this project will be from Kibra,” he said.

“The housing programme is not just about houses, it also gives us an opportunity for employment.”
