During a visit to Bungoma County on Sunday, President Ruto made remarks that seemed to criticize his deputy’s approach to regional politics. Gachagua has been vocal about the need for the Mt. Kenya region to unite as a community, especially in preparation for the 2027 elections. However, Ruto strongly opposed this sentiment, asserting that those promoting division based on ethnicity or region would ultimately fail.

“Those who want to divide us will fail and they will fail miserably,” said Ruto. “Those who want to preach to us sectarian ethnic, parochial regional politics will not succeed in this country.”

Despite Ruto’s remarks, Deputy President Gachagua defended his stance, emphasizing that regional unity is crucial for maintaining relevance in Kenya’s national political landscape. He expressed concern that the Mt. Kenya region might lose its influence if it does not remain united.

“Our strength is our unity. We get divided, hii mlima itapotea,” Gachagua said. “We must stay united as a people so that we are relevant in the national political discourse.
