Despite not seeming to be winning for the whole of the game on Tuesday, La Roja will face Croatia, Italy, and the Netherlands in the Nations League finals.
In the 88th minute, Alvaro Morata stepped up to complete Nico Williams’ skillful knockdown, propelling Spain to the top of League A2. Throughout, Spain had produced relatively little.
Out-of-form Ronaldo, whose team’s two best scoring chances went to them, is continuing to suffer dangerously. He took a shot directly at the goalie on both occasions.
As Spain often moved the ball about aimlessly without any penetration and their opponents were alarmingly lifeless in front of goal, this was hardly a glowing suggestion for either team’s chances at the World Cup.
Williams headed a diagonal ball back across goal for Portugal with two minutes remaining, and Morata buried the resulting goal from close range. Earlier, Portugal had missed multiple chances to score.
