In a large gathering, the elders endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their link to President William Ruto’s administration. The elders drawn from Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties declared their allegiance to Kindiki, stating that he would henceforth be the kingpin of Mt Kenya East.

While endorsing Kindiki, the elders said he has passed the Njuri Ncheke test for leadership. They urged him to work with Ruto and bring development to the region, as is the case in other parts of the country.

“We, the Njuri Ncheke elders from the counties of Meru and Tharaka Nithi, have gathered here in Njiru to say that Kithure Kindiki, who has a cordial working relationship with our President William Ruto, is our favourite. Today Njuri Ncheke in their numbers have endorsed him as our kingpin and spokesman. He will be our link as Mt Kenya East to President William Ruto,” the elders said in a statement.

They added that Kindiki’s national stature would help them foster good relations with other regions. Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri clarified that the Nyahururu Declaration focuses on Mt Kenya’s regional development, not on individual political agendas. He said Kindiki’s role is technical, linking Mt Kenya’s leadership with the president, while Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua continues his political role.

Kiunjuri stressed that the caucus aims to address regional budget priorities, keeping politics separate from development discussions.
