– The Party of National Unity (PNU) has had a change of heart about leaving the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.

During an interview, PNU party leader Peter Munya revealed that the former ruling party’s National Executive Council (NEC) had arrived at not leaving the opposition outfit.

He explained that the NEC argued that it was not the right time to jump ship, adding that they were stronger together.

The former county chief observed that the party were in a better place to champion better governance and change from within Azimio.

“PNU is still in Azimio. I had given my opinion that if things continue as they are then we shall consider leaving. I invited our NEC to look at whether we should stay or leave, and after a long discussion and consultation with other parties that form the coalition, we agreed that it may not be opportune to leave at this point.

We are stronger together. If we leave, it is better to leave as a group so that you still have a coalition that can continue pushing for change that we need and are pushing for in the opposition.

I got persuaded to that view instead of pulling out as PNU alone, we see if we can bring change within Azimio, if we can’t do that then we still have that option,” he explained.

Munya’s statement comes days after Martha Karua and her party, Narc Kenya, opted to leave Azimio.

In a brief notice to Azimio La Umoja secretary general Junet Mohamed, the group cited “ongoing political developments” as the reason for its immediate resignation from Azimio.

The party, along with others, co-founded the coalition leading up to the 2022 presidential election, in which Karua ran for vice president alongside Raila Odinga.
