In a close race, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party lost to Bola Tinubu of the current All Progressives Congress (APC). Although Atiku received 6,984,520 votes to finish second in the election, Tinubu received major votes in 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states and received significant votes in many other states to get the most votes — 8,794,726.

Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate who, in less than a year, rallied youthful voters in an unprecedented way, ended the race with 6,101,533.

Both Atiku and Obi have said that the election results would be challenged in court.

At a news conference on Friday in Abuja, Mr Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, said that the election results were tainted since the commission failed to send polling unit results as required by the Electoral Act.

He insisted that the departure of the INEC Chairperson would be the first step in restoring trust in the electoral body.

Ologunagba further requested that the INEC Chairman be investigated by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, the Directorate of State Services (DSS), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (INEC).
