Naija News reports that Obasanjo made this known at his home in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a meeting with six members of the House of Representatives.
In the snippet shared by Channels TV, Obasanjo opined that the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission are supposed to fix the salaries and allowances of Nigerian lawmakers.
According to the former President, it is immoral for lawmakers to determine the amount they earn.
In his words, “With all due respect, you are not supposed to fix your salaries or allowances. It is supposed to be done by the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission. But you decide to pay yourself, the allowances that you give yourself, both paper allowances, pant allowances, you give yourself all sorts of things. and you know it is not right.
“It is not right for me to determine what I pay myself, it is immoral but you are doing it. The senate is doing it and you beat your chest, and even in some cases, the executive give you things that you are not entitled to. You all got N200 million.”
Meanwhile, Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that many individuals currently in public office in Nigeria should be locked up in prison.
According to him, leaders do not possess the necessary qualities to effectively lead the nation, suggesting they would be better suited for incarceration or worse.
Obasanjo noted that the proposed six-year single-term presidency is not a viable solution to the challenges bedevilling the country.
The former president stressed the need for the country to rethink its democracy.
Obasanjo emphasized that the West African nation is precariously positioned, likening it to a powder keg that could erupt if leaders do not take bold and decisive actions to tackle the numerous challenges at hand.
The former President asserted that the demands raised by the #EndBadGovernance protesters are entirely valid, urging the government to address these issues rather than merely masking them.
He pointed out that it is inappropriate for those in power to continue enjoying lavish lifestyles while urging the struggling populace to persevere.
