No relative of the dozens of mutilated bodies of young women dumped in Kware, Mukuru slums, has come out to claim them, a City Mortuary official has said.

“We have not seen anyone come to claim any of the remains, we are shocked,” the official, sought anonymity told the Star, said.

The official said they do not even know the number of bodies they have received as they were in pieces.

“We cannot tell the number of bodies we have received as they are in parts. It is until DNA is done that the number can be established,” the official said.

Authorities are now relying on autopsies to demystify the discoveries, which have shocked the nation.

An autopsy is an examination of a body after death to determine the cause of death or the character and extent of changes produced by disease.

He said DNA tests will be done either on Monday or Tuesday to establish the identity of the victims.

DNA is the molecule that carries genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism.

The official said they do not know what is happening apart from receiving bodies for preservation.

“I do not have any information I can share about the incident,” he said, referring us to the police.

“My only job is to receive and preserve.”

Reports indicate at least eight bodies have been confirmed as those retrieved.

Of the bodies recovered, some initially thought to be humans were later discovered to be dog carcasses.
