Southgate went for a 3-4-2-1 formation and that seemed to work perfectly for the Three Lions. And it’s one that would suit Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The two wingbacks in the game Reece James and Luke Shaw made a goalscoring contribution in the 3-3 draw.

With the new formation, England were the better team in the final third and still solid defensively. Barring errors from Maguire and Pope, England could’ve won it.

As far as attacking fullbacks in England go, there’s none better than Trent. If Southgate knows this, there’s no reason why he would drop the Liverpool defender from his World Cup squad. Even if he doesn’t intend to use him regularly.
