A political solution is required in Mali. The crisis in the country has lingered for too long and might create a Libya-like situation that has affected the whole of Africa. However, the media has mastered the art of instigating crises and cashing in as the drama unfolds. Take the Arab Spring for instance. The media coined the term “Arab Spring”.

Empowered by the media, protesters organized in Africa, starting in Tunisia gathered together to speak out against oppression, inspiring hope for a better, more democratic future. This in itself is a good thing. The media however hijacked the protest to do what they do best, create drama. They called it a historic moment. The New York Times called it

“Light from the Arab Spring rose from the ground up, the hope is now that the darkness doesn’t fall”

Commentators, compared these activists to the US peace protesters of 1968, praised the effort as democratic dawn for an area that had long been populated by autocracy. It was so epic everyone wanted to be part of this moment in history. From Africa to the middle east catapulting the region into instability. The Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was toppled. Wanting to be part of this “historic moment” Libyans decided to make their mark in history by toppling Gadaffi. They had no reason to. Libyans were well off compared to others.

Gadaffi was smart enough to see there is a ploy to oust him. He aggressively shut down digital channels people use to organize protests. The western media cried bloody foul, “a tyrant trying to silence the voice of the people.
