Wambui’s life changed after her husband, who was the sole provider for the family, sadly passed away. “She introduced us, the family, to a certain pastor. She has said her mother-in-law, whom they have never met, was throwing things at her, like bewitching her. She was told about a church where they could pray with our mum. I was invited one day, and I honoured the invite,” she recalled.

It was not long before another of her sisters approached and told them she also had a pastor. She asked them to visit her in her local church for prayers and services so that they could pray together.

“Her pastor had told her that our home had things that were buried deep under, and those were the things that were ‘eating up’ our family and that the person who had buried those things was in our family.

He dug up some things, and I saw them. One resembled a human being and was tied up using black masking tape. So he dug them up and told us those were the things. Then they went up onto the ceiling. They removed a bottle with a picture tied to it and said those were the people being bewitched,” the Nairobi woman narrated.

Wambui said her mum believed the sister, who had introduced her to the other pastor, would do anything she said.

Wambui, however, was sceptical of the practices she later observed and distanced herself from the family church, for example, wearing short dresses, praying too much, and attending church on Tuesdays.

“My sister became powerful. She could see some things and was even organised as pastor. My mum bent to her every word, request and advice. She had a following, and she even opened a church.

My other sister, who had heart problems, was advised not to take medicine but trust in God, but when her health deteriorated, she was taken to hospital and got well. She lived for a few more months and died. Seven months later, my mother, who was diabetic and had high blood pressure, also died because of following the same advice against medicine and putting faith in God to heal her,” she heartbreakingly said.

Separately, Edith Muthoni Muriithi said she was puzzled when she arrived at the mortuary only to find the body of her granddaughter Stella Mukami put in the casket.

The Embu woman was told it was like Mukami’s last wedding and that the young girl had agreed to be buried in that outfit.…CONTINUE READING>>
