The County ODM chairman George Aladwa welcomed the call saying the Kenya Kwanza administration needs support, especially after roping in four ODM members into the cabinet.
In a statement, the Makadara MP said Ruto has shown goodwill by expanding his government to accommodate the opposition.
“Thus, by ODM extending its support to the government, it means we are supporting our members inside to deliver on their mandate to serve Kenyans and contribute positively towards socio-economic and political development,” Aladwa said.
“As the chairman of Nairobi County, I will lead my team to offer the necessary support towards this goal.”
Ruto had last month appointed ODM members to critical dockets in his administration.
The four are John Mbadi (National Treasury), Hassan Joho (Blue Economy and Irrigation), Opiyo Wandayi (Energy and Petroleum), Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives) and Beatrice Askul (East Africa Community (EAC), ASAL and Regional Development).
According to Aladwa, it is time for ODM to reciprocate the gesture and support the new-looking government.
“Whereas our democracy provides for both government and opposition sides, the spirit of Kenya is such that a time comes when we put our differences aside for the common good of our country,” he stated.
“As legislators and leaders, we serve the same public; whose desire to have roads, markets, healthcare, education, housing, amongst others offered to them.”
Aladwa’s remarks come at a time when there are reports of cracks in the ODM party of the broad-based government with some leaders especially from Nairobi publicly criticising the deal.
Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino have separately declared they will remain in the opposition.
But Aladwa now appeals to the lawmakers to consider their position and rally behind Nyong’o’s direction.
“It is prudent that as leaders, including those from our party ODM, to heed Prof. Nyong’o’s call and give ideas aimed at improving the welfare of our people under the theme of one indivisible nation where social equality is guaranteed,” Aladwa stated.
Nyong’o, last week, whipped ODM members to support the broad-based government, a position is widely believed to be shared by the former party boss Raila Odinga.
