I want to work in a big house as a cleaner. This man approached my mother and told her that he would like to marry me as his fifth wife. He says he wants young, fresh blood. He said he will pay 5M as my bride price, As soon as my mother heard that, it was like they removed her brain, and the only thing she could think about was money.
But I can’t see myself even going close to that man, talk less of marrying him. I don’t want my life to end just like that. If he wasn’t crippled, maybe I would have managed, but he isn’t even complete, and he is old too.
My mother said she would disown me, and honestly, I don’t care because she has her life, and she will not destroy mine. Each time she cries, saying I don’t want to help her and my siblings, I feel torn. I really don’t know if I’m doing the right thing, so please, I need you guys to advise me on this one.
I want to run away, but I don’t have any place to go. I live in a state, and I want to run away to Lagos. If anybody is willing to employ me and provide accommodation, I don’t mind working even if it’s for 20,000 Naira. I’ll accept it as long as I’m working and far from my mother.
I want to run away because I cannot watch this old woman marry me off to a crippled 75-year-old man who barely talks. He’s always moping. He only talks when he wants to send somebody to do something or make a transfer. Now, I feel like he wants to buy me off with 15 million Naira, and I don’t want that to happen.
I am still very young. I have a bright future. I am intelligent, and I know that I can go through life without his money. If only my mother would hear that and let me be. But since she doesn’t want to listen to me, I will do it the hard way. I hope I am doing the right thing.
