She was having a constant headache and had to go back to her mother’s house after being pushed away by her in-laws. “I would visit my child whenever I found fare and time. I was to return and take her permanently when I felt better. She was four months old when her in-laws took her. The visits were inconsistent as it was difficult for me,” the single mum said.

As time passed, her relationship with her in-laws became strained, and their grip faded. She bitterly recalled being informed one day that her husband and child had died and was even shown their graves.

After the news, Njeri shifted her focus to building her life and destiny since she had nothing else to hold onto. A decade later, after having two more kids and going through a lot, Njeri wanted to share her life story.

“It was my ex-husband’s brother. He asked me why I never attended my ex-husband’s burial and why I was not invited. However, he told me my child was alive and that she had been hidden in Kitale. I could not believe it.

“She is in Grade 8 in a boarding school. I am looking forward to reuniting with her after 10 years since she was taken away from me. She is healthy and okay, though I doubt she will remember me,” the Murang’a mum said.
