Some remains were gradually retrieved over time. Speaking, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo said following the closure of the Sensele Mine accident case a week ago, the small-scale miners, in collaboration with the technical team at the site, were given two weeks to search the area and complete the recovery process.

“During this period, four more remains were retrieved yesterday, bringing the total number of recovered individuals to 31, with one person found alive,” Mr Matambo said.

He added, “The government, under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema and Vice-President Mutale Nalumango, through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), has provided all the necessary logistics to ensure a dignified send-off for our deceased brothers, as has been done for the others. Out of the four remains retrieved yesterday, one has been identified, and DNA tests will be conducted to identify the remaining ones.”

Mr Matambo further said the Sensele Mine site would now be secured, and the government has called for reinforced security at the location to prevent any future accidents.

“Our position is to formalise small-scale mining activities at Sensele Mine so that our miners can work in a safe and conducive environment,” he said.

He also said government is in talks with dumpsite stakeholders to explore alternative income sources for small-scale miners while efforts to formalize operations at Sensele Mine are ongoing….CLICK HERE FOR MORE ARTICLE>>>
