Speaking to the press on Friday afternoon, the student leaders called on all university students within Mombasa County to join the protests as they sought to compel the government to abandon the model.
While venting their frustrations over the new funding model, the students termed the new model as oppressive and discriminatory to students especially those from humble backgrounds.
“We are here as the university students association of all universities and colleges within Mombasa County, and our call is that on Monday, September 9, we are coming out in numbers to demonstrate against this oppressive system of funding,” stated one of the student leaders.
During the presser, the student leaders also called on their parents to join the demonstrations until the government heeded their call.
The students while insisting on the matter, the students’ representatives accused the government of failing to involve them in formulating the funding model before its implementation.
“We call on our parents to come out because they are the main stakeholders, they are the ones that are going to pay this fee. Should they allow such impunity to persist they are the ones that will face the burden,” commented the student representatives.
“We do not know how this was developed, there is no transparency and it is becoming a burden for all the students and their families.”
The latest announcement by the student leaders in Mombasa comes barely a week after the University of Nairobi (UoN) student leaders made a similar decree against the new university funding model.
At a presser held on August 31, the UoN student leaders called on fellow students from other universities across the country to join them in their planned protest which was set to kick off on Monday, September 2.
The leaders claimed that their efforts to engage the government on the matter have bore no fruit leaving them with no option other than to call for nationwide demonstrations.
“The public at large is crying because they have been placed in the wrong bands and subjected to pay excessive amounts of fees,” narrated one of the student leaders.
