A day of celebration for a newly appointed headteacher took a tragic turn after he was involved in an accident on his way home. A report by Citizen Digital states that the accident occurred at a blackspot along the Migori-Sori Road. Oyombe was reportedly struck on the head by the truck and suffered a broken leg, leading to his immediate death.
It is suspected that the truck, which had only one functioning headlight, may have been mistaken by the deceased for an approaching motorbike.
The family stated that they learned of Oyombe’s tragic death through a phone call from their cousin in Nairobi. They explained that someone at the scene contacted their cousin, who found Oyombe’s daughter’s leaving certificate, which helped them trace the cousin.
“So, one of the first respondents recognised the name ‘Oyombe’ written on the leaving certificate and called our cousin who is in Nairobi, who shares the same surname, and who in turn called home to inform us of the accident,” said the family.
The body of the deceased was transported to the Migori District Hospital morgue, awaiting burial set for Friday, September 27.
“This is a great tragedy to the family and the teaching fraternity,”Oyombe’s relative said. The truck was towed from the accident site and brought to a nearby police station.
The teacher is survived by two wives and six children, one of whom is scheduled to take her KCSE exams in October this year.
This incident follows an accident along the Kericho-Mau Summit Road that claimed the lives of three people and left 13 others injured.
Kericho County Traffic Enforcement Officer Selina Chirchir said the accident occurred after a Toyota Hiace matatu traveling from Londiani to Kericho collided with an oil tanker.
According to the police boss, the oil tanker also hit three other cars behind the PSV matatu. However, Chirchir said no vehicle driver was injured in the accident.
