He was voted as the man of the match in Argentina’s 2-1 win over Australia by the world football governing body FIFA.

By winning this, he has surpassed his rival, Cristiano Ronaldo as the player with the most man of the match award in the history of FIFA World Cup.

It will be recalled that after the group stage match between Portugal and Ghana, Cristiano Ronaldo made headlines by winning his 7th man of the match award and was praised for being the player with the most award.

Lionel Messi went on to equal his accomplishment after winning the award following his fine performance in the Argentine’s 2-0 win over Mexico. He has now won another to make it his 8th man of the match award in the FIFA World Cup.
