Mason Mount reportedly favours a move to Manchester United over Liverpool or Arsenal ahead of a likely summer exit from Chelsea. The England star could depart Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2023-24 season with his Blues contract due to expire in a year.

Mount is expected to be the subject of a high-profile summer battle between several Premier League giants when the domestic transfer window opens on June 14. Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal have all been linked with the 24-year-old, while Chelsea are supposedly still keen to extend his current terms.

However, a transfer now seems likely despite the impending arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea’s head coach. Of the reported interest, the playmaker is reportedly ‘leaning towards’ a blockbuster switch to United where he would join Erik ten Hag’s rebuild of the Red Devils.

It is claimed that talks between both parties are set to take place ‘in due course’. Other interested clubs are apparently aware of Mount’s preference, and there could yet be further twists in the saga.

According to The Athletic, United still face several hurdles if they are to complete a deal for Mount. Both clubs would still need to agree a fee for the player, while the United transfer hierarchy is prioritising the signing of a new striker.

There also remains a lack of clarity over the ownership situation of the club. Questions are therefore likely to be raised over who will need to come up with the bill for a likely eye-watering transfer fee.

United boss Ten Hag is keen to add to his midfield during the off-season, having struggled for depth in the position this season. Casemiro has missed several games through injury, while midfield partner Christian Eriksen missed two crucial months through injury just after the turn of the year.

Marcel Sabitzer, brought in during the January transfer window to cover for those absences, had his season ended prematurely to an injury of his own. Mount would therefore be a welcome addition at Old Trafford.

But there remains doubt over whether the Three Lions ace will move at all. Pochettino, who is widely expected to be imminently announced as Chelsea’s new manager, is reported to be a big fan of the player and that could yet play a part in Mount’s future.

Other interested clubs are unlikely to give up in their pursuit of one of Gareth Southgate’s most trusted stars. Liverpool and Arsenal have both been linked with Mount, amid both clubs’ desire to improve their respective midfield options.

Mount fell out of favour at Chelsea this season, for the first time since being integrated into the first-team fold by Frank Lampard at the start of the 2019-20 season. He has featured in just three games since February 26, and abdominal surgery has ruled him out of the Blues’ remaining two matches.
