Mason Mount Is A Fantastic Signing But Manchester United Need Harry Kane, Insists Club Legend John O’Shea

John O’Shea has given Manchester United his seal of approval over their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.

And the Red Devils legend has urged Erik ten Hag’s side to bring in the 24-year-old’s England teammate Harry Kane to close the gap on Manchester City.

talkSPORT understands that United are edging closer to signing Mount after agreeing personal terms with the player.

United are also in the market for a new centre-forward, with Anthony Martial to be potentially be sold following another season plagued by injuries.

Kane has been heavily linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams with the Three Lions skipper having just a year left on his Tottenham contract.

Speaking on the Sports Breakfast, O’Shea, who won 14 major honours at Old Trafford between 1999-2011, was asked what areas he would look to improve on in the summer.

To which the 42-year-old said: “It’s straightforward, you go and get Harry Kane, but that’s not going to be as straightforward as me saying it like that.

“It is frustrating for Martial because he’s shown glimpses this season under Ten Hag who was using him very well and was becoming a great link player for the team, creating goals and assisting and scoring himself.”

As for United’s move for Mount, O’Shea remarked: “He’s definitely shown over the last few years in the Premier League and in Europe the quality he possesses.

“And if you think how he’s performed for England too, he’s definitely a player you’d be looking at.

O’Shea played 393 times for United – winning 14 major honours

“And if they can get business like that done early, it’s a fantastic addition and he will add to the goals in terms of creating and scoring them himself too.

“So if that is a done deal, it’s a great bit of business early, because look at Chelsea, Chelsea have nearly three squads, there will be plenty of players coming and going in the summer as well.”

Asked by talkSPORT host Natalie Sawyer whether Mount would be a regular starter, O’Shea stated: “I think he would hope to be.

“But that’s the beauty of challenging for all the major honours, you need that really competitive squad, I think the big thing is you have to trust the manager, Ten Hag.

“I heard it mentioned recently how he was going to have a big part to play in the recruitment.

“I’m hoping that if he’s got his eyes on him [Mount], then he knows what he wants and what he needs to get back challenging at the top of the table and back in the Champions League as well.”
