Manchester United have several key players out of contract in the summer. One of those stars is Portugal international Diogo Dalot who has been reinvigorated over the past twelve months....CONTINUE READING

Dalot was not fancied under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the Norwegian’s near-three year reign at Old Trafford. It was under Ralf Rangnick where the fullback really started to find his feet.

Up until Rangnick took charge, it seemed as though Dalot’s future at the Theatre of Dreams was ambiguous. Aaron Wan-Bissaka was favoured by Solskjaer but after the German took charge, Dalot’s fortunes changed.

Now, the 24-year-old is one of the first names on Erik ten Hag’s teamsheet and has become a vital component of United’s current back four which has been superb in the Premier League thus far.

Dalot’s contract does expire in the summer. However, Manchester United have an option to extend his current deal by a further year, a clause inserted in each player’s contracts.

United are actively looking to expand the player’s deal beyond the end of the season and while the club can activate his extension clause, the board also want to offer a new permanent deal to reward him for his excellent form.

But, according to Fabrizio Romano, any chance of handing Dalot improved terms to stay at Old Trafford will have to be put on pause until after the World Cup, meaning the defender may not put pen to paper until January (via the Peoples Person):

“There is an option to extend Diogo Dalot’s contract for one more season.”

“There is a good relationship between Dalot’s camp and Man United, but it will take some time to offer a new deal due to the World Cup.”

“Summer 2021, Dortmund and Atletico Madrid, also AC Milan were really pushed to sign Diogo Dalot. But Manchester United said no — Dalot wanted to stay and wanted to fight for his place in Manchester United.”
