Malawi’s main opposition party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has endorsed former President Peter Mutharika as its candidate for the 2025 presidential election. During his acceptance speech, Mutharika said that he and his party would fix the nation’s economy, which has struggled under Chakwera. Mutharika, who served as president from 2014 to 2020, oversaw infrastructure improvements and a slowdown in inflation during his tenure.

He plans to form an opposition alliance with the United Transformation Movement (UTM), the party that helped Chakwera defeat him in the 2020 polls.

The UTM had pulled out of its alliance with Chakwera after its leader, former Vice President Saulos Chilima, died in a plane crash in June. However, it is yet to confirm an alliance with Mutharika’s DPP…CONTINUE READING>>
