Many billionaires living in Kenya have started from the bottom, the classic rags to riches tale. Some of these individuals started with low-paying jobs and over time, worked extra hard to earn the coveted ‘tycoon’ titles.

Some of these started their careers as officers serving in the disciplined forces of the motherland, Kenya. Positions range from police officers to prison wardens and even police reservists.

These individuals hold investments in various sectors of the economy through their various companies, private or family-owned. Here are some of the names:

During the late former president Daniel Moi’s era, Joshua Kulei served as his aide who was responsible for all of Moi’s financial and business dealings, while Mark Too oversaw political assignments.

Joshua Kulei started his career as a Prison Warden. Due to his low educational background, he was often looked down upon.

He however relished his underdog status and worked hard to prove wrong those who thought less of him.

Allegedly, the former President and Joshua Kulei were so close together that they held interests in various companies together. For example, the pair acquired Sian Flowers on a 60:40 basis. Kulei however used his family name, Chemusian to mask the ownership identity.

Kroll Report published a document revealing that they co-jointly owned Ngata Flower Farms in Nakuru on a 50:50 basis. It also shared that Kulei and Gideon Moi each owned 12.5% of the global logistics company, Siginon Freight.

Reportedly, Joshua Kulei also has a 38% stake in Standard Media Group which owns KTN Home, KTN News, and Spice FM among others. He operates a majority of his business under The Sovereign Group.

Sovereign Group is said to have numerous dealings in Agribusiness, Real Estate, Hospitality, Tourism, ICT, Technology, Mining, Logistics, Insurance, Media, Education and Security.

Among the companies it is associated with include Regent Group, SPC Properties, Kenya Agrotech, Intercontinental Hotel, Maasai Ostrich Resort, Merica Hotel, Regional Logistics Centre, C tea, Adility, Quality Quarries, Nine One One Group, Crater Lake Sanctuary, Mobile World (K) Limited, Liaison, Fidelity insurance and Sunshine Secondary School.

On previous occasions, none of Jimi Richard Wanjigi’s interests in business or his bid to hold the highest political seat in the country would hint at his experience in the National Police Service.

The billionaire businessman started as a police reservist with NPS before rising to the rank of inspector. However, he unceremoniously exited the service in what NPS claimed was due to ‘threatening other people’.

However, Wanjigi chose to keep his guns. Wanjigi has made a name for himself in business through the Kwacha Group of Companies, whose offices are located in Westlands.

Kwacha is a multibillion-family business empire, which serves as the holding firm for other businesses owned by the tycoon family.

According to reports, Kwacha Group has shares in Barclays Bank, Total Kenya, Kenya Airways, East Africa Cables, and Carbicid investments. It also owns Kwacha Real Estate firm with investments in various parts of the country.

TYL Limited, a company known to transact business to the tune of billions is also owned by Jimi Wanjigi. Information in the public domain suggests that this is the company responsible for partaking in tendering government projects.

Jimi Wanjigi is also the owner of Caramel Restaurant, one of the most prestigious restaurants in Nairobi, located at ABC Place in Westlands.

In 2017, the former Kilome Member of Parliament was ranked among the wealthiest individuals in Africa. John Harun Mwau is a former businessman and politician.

He dropped out of school in 1968 to join the police force, through which he grew to become one of Kenya’s best-skilled sharpshooters in his 20s.

He has competed in various sharpshooter sports such as the 1968 and the 1972 Summer Olympics, as a rifle shooter and a pistol shooter respectively. Harun Mwau was sacked from the police force in later years for failing to shave his beard.

This marked his entry into the field of politics. In 1992, he founded the Party of Independent Candidates of Kenya (PICK) and vied for the presidential seat, but lost.

Reportedly, some of the businesses where he serves as director as well as has an interest include Vitu Ltd, Tom Brown Lts, Kuston Kenya Ltd, JN Records Ltd, Pepe Enterprises Ltd, Harun International Limited, Africa Center for Hope Initiative Everywhere, Sheltown Limited and Mwundo Limited.

Harun Mwau previously worked as the first director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Authority. It is estimated that his net worth is well above Sh. 110 billion making him considerably the richest Kamba.

An alumnus of the Alliance High School in the 70s, Dr. James Mageria has been hailed as a maverick and pioneer in the Kenyan medical field. He is the founder of Karen Hospital.

After High School, James Mageria joined the police force where he was described by most colleagues as a man driven by honesty and integrity. His virtues saw him rise to the rank of Commandant at Kiganjo Police Training College in 1996.
