The shock recording dropped just hours after Republicans bashed the Minnesota governor for his handling of protests in 2020. A Trump offensive against Walz started when the governor was named Harris’s vice presidential nominee.

Republicans have recently criticized Walz for his handling of the protests that sparked in Minneapolis, Minnesota after George Floyd was killed.

This condemnation has been turned on its head after a call between then-President Trump and governors showed a different tone. The June 1 2020 call showed Trump highlighting and praising Governor Walz’s actions during the protests.

“I fully agree with the way he handled it the last couple of days. I asked him to do that,” Trump said in the call obtained by CBS. The then-President told the group of governors that Walz had “dominated” in his reaction to protests.

“The best example, I alluded to it a couple of seconds ago, is Minneapolis,” Trump said. “It was incredible what happened in the State of Minnesota. They were a laughingstock all over the world.”

Trump then said he had called Walz a few days after the protests started and continued to praise him. “You’ve got a big National Guard out there that’s ready to come in and fight like hell. I tell you, the best — what they did in Minneapolis was incredible,” Trump added.

The then-President was also heard commending Walz’s character. “He is an excellent guy,” Trump said. Republicans have hit out at Walz in the past few days with criticism of his response time in 2020.

Several GOP figures have questioned the time it took the Minnesota governor to deploy the National Guard. Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, earlier this week said Walz “allowed rioters to burn down Minneapolis in the summer of 2020,” according to CNN.

The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, posted a condemnation of Walz on X. “He let cities in his state burn down,” Abbott wrote about the protests.

Trump’s campaign press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, also issued a scathing attack against Walz this week, according to CBS News.

“Governor Walz allowed Minneapolis to burn for days, despite President Trump’s offer to deploy soldiers and cries for help from the liberal Mayor of Minneapolis,” Leavitt said.

“In this daily briefing phone call with Governors on June 1, days after the riots began, President Trump acknowledged Governor Walz for FINALLY taking action to deploy the National Guard to end the violence in the city...CONTINUE READING>>
