The arrest, which took place on the morning of September 8, 2024, highlights ongoing efforts to combat ethnic divisiveness in Kenya. The arrested official was Jeremiah Mutua, MCA for Nguni Ward, and the Deputy Minority Leader of the Kitui County Assembly.
The NCIC’s actions followed reports of statements made by the leader that allegedly fostered ethnic division. Mutua made his remarks on Facebook. After their arrest, the lawmaker recorded a statement with the commission and was subsequently released pending further investigation.
“The MCA has since recorded and released the statement as further investigations are undertaken,” the commission stated. The NCIC, in a statement, emphasised the gravity of the situation and the need for adherence to legal and ethical standards, especially by those in leadership positions.
“The Commission calls on the affected communities, especially politicians, to exercise tolerance as the rule of law takes its course,” the NCIC stated. Mutua was summoned Thursday last week after his Facebook post was considered reckless. In a series of posts first shared on August 27, the lawmaker reportedly asked all camel herders to vacate the ward.
“I have given 24 hours notice to Camel herders grazing in Sosoma-Mwanzele & Ukasi villages to move out of the Kamba grazing land,” read the post.
This incident underscores the NCIC’s resolve to enforce laws designed to foster unity and prevent ethnic conflicts, which have historically posed challenges to peace and development in various regions of Kenya.
By holding leaders accountable, the NCIC aims to set a precedent that discourages ethnic contempt and promotes a more inclusive society.
