Kenyans on social media are abuzz after reports that eight baobab trees that were exported to Georgia have died.

The trees were uprooted in Kilifi county despite the outcry from the local community leaders and environmentalists.

The Dendrological Park has blamed the opposition to the tree export, which led to delays in transplantation.

“As a result of delays, trees that were uprooted in 2021 did not reach Georgia until October 2023 due to artificially created obstacles. Only on November 8, 2023, were they finally planted in the soil.

Until then, the African ‘giants’ had to endure nearly two years in an uprooted state, in completely inappropriate environmental conditions, where they also lacked proper care.

Unfortunately, this stress took a toll on these unique plants, and six to seven months after being planted in Georgian soil, all eight baobab trees died,” Dendrological Park said in a statement posted on Facebook.

The baobab trees were exported from Kenya despite strong opposition from conservationists and Kaya Elders.

Conservationists argued that the export violated several international agreements Kenya had signed, while Kaya Elders, who consider the trees sacred, demanded compensation to perform rituals to appease their gods.
