The United Nations Health Organisation (WHO) reported that the disease outbreak has affected Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), prompting the warning.

WHO laboratories have confirmed samples of infection in patients, and Burundi has confirmed three cases of Mpox in the cities of Bunjumbura and Isare.

According to the British Broadcasting Agency (BBC), a Mpox explosion has occurred in Rwanda, making the Central African Republic the third country to announce the existence of an outbreak.

According to the WHO, since 2022, the DRC has had 21,000 cases and over 1,000 deaths due to Mpox, with many of those who contracted and died from the disease being children under the age of five.

Burundi is bordering the DRC, Rwanda, and Tanzania, while the DRC is bordering five East African Community countries: Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Sudan.
