Self-proclaimed investigative journalist Kemi Olunloyo has dropped intriguing details about the release of Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, from a UK prison.
The news of Beatrice’s unexpected freedom from her 4-year, 6-month sentence—handed down in 2022—has dominated headlines, sparking waves of speculation. While initial reports attributed her release to good behavior, Olunloyo’s inside scoop reveals a far more layered and intriguing tale.
According to the journalist, Beatrice’s sudden release wasn’t simply due to her prison conduct. She claimed the primary reason was a compassionate plea to allow Beatrice to care for her 26-year-old daughter, Sonia, who has reportedly plunged into a deep depression, struggling with a mental health crisis fueled by guilt.
Sonia’s deteriorating state is allegedly tied to the realization that her health struggles triggered her parents’ convictions.
Olunloyo didn’t stop there. She claimed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo played a pivotal behind-the-scenes role in securing Beatrice’s freedom. Obasanjo, known for his international influence and diplomatic ties, reportedly intervened, leveraging his clout to orchestrate her early release.
The saga dates back to March 2023, when Beatrice, her husband Ike, and a medical doctor, Obinna Obeta, were convicted under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act of 2015.
The trio was found guilty of conspiring to traffic a young Nigerian man to the UK with the intention of harvesting his kidney for Sonia, who suffers from a chronic kidney condition.
The grim tale unraveled after the young man, allegedly lured with promises of work and a better life in the UK, reported the plot to the police in May 2022. He claimed he was brought to the country under false pretenses for an organ transplant he was not willing to undergo.
While Beatrice is now back in Nigeria, her husband Ike remains in a UK prison, serving his 9-year, 8-month sentence for the same crime.
