Speaking to Inooro TV, the convict blamed his actions on the fact that, at the time it happened, he was an addict controlled by alcohol and substances.

An apologetic Mwangi is hopeful that he will soon be among the prisoners released through the Presidential Pardon programme.

What makes him look forward to freedom is the assurance from his family members that they will receive him warmly despite his mistake.

Apart from his mother, Mwangi regrets the vast opportunities he has lost in life because of his actions. During his stay at Mathare, Mwangi regained his capacity for thinking and realised the gravity of his actions.

Having cleaned up from alcohol and substance use, he now looks back at the past and regrets what he did. Elsewhere, history seemed to repeat after 40 years when the daughter of a gender-based violence survivor was allegedly killed by his husband.

Helen Murugi was born and raised by Piah Njoki, who was attacked by her husband in 1983 for giving birth to girls only. Njoki filed for divorce, with the vicious attack leaving her blind at a time when she was pregnant with Helen.
