The officers had been denied entry during the day after they trailed a vehicle they suspected carried explosives. Wanjigi’s main gate remained closed for the better of the day, forcing the officers to camp outside.

They would later at night break the gate and doors to enter the house, where they hunted through the rooms and corners.

Wanjigi’s lawyers divulged the officers forcibly conducted two searches times apart without a warrant and, besides causing damage, made away with valuables: money, phones, iPads and watches.

Wanjigi was not found in the course of the searches. Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli said the aforementioned suspicious vehicle was speeding and parked right outside the gate to Wanjigi’s home.

It was alleged that occupants disembarked and went inside the compound moments before heavily armed police officers arrived. Police cordoned off the home with yellow tape connoting a crime scene.

The officers, including those from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), searched the suspicious vehicle, where they discovered police communication gadgets, and four teargas canisters, among other items.

But Wanjigi’s lawyers dismissed the discoveries saying they were planted by the police. The businessman has lately been vocal against the current regime, which he accuses of forcing Kenyans to service an odious debt.

The national debt currently stands at upward of KSh 10 trillion. According to Wanjigi, it was unlawful for Kenyans to be burdened by a loan that was fraudulently acquired during former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure.
