The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has accused the acting Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, of frustrating its investigations into police brutality. IPOA commissioner John Waiganjo called for the arrest of Kanja and the Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei over what he termed questionable police conduct during the protests.....CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE>>>

During the interview on Citizen TV, Waiganjo said they were frustrated by the senior police officers, whom he accused of not providing information.

Waiganjo revealed that the authority is incensed by police officers’ conduct, adding that they would seek an arrest warrant since senior officers bear responsibility for their juniors’ actions.

“We are very frustrated when we do not get information from the police commanders. That is why we are calling out the Nairobi police commander Adamson Bungei, the acting IG, and we are saying that if we are not going to get this information, we are going to petition the court to issue a warrant for their arrest because they carry the biggest responsibility,” he explained.

Waiganjo revealed that they had been monitoring officers while engaging protesters, questioning why they had been covering their faces and hiding their names and badges.

“We have monitored the tooling of the officers, we have seen the substances that they are using, we know that they are not well prepared, they are using live bullets,” Waiganjo stated.

He argued that hiding their faces was the first show that the police have ill motives when deployed, claiming a special unit had been unleashed on protesters.

“It is clear that the police are breaking the law. We are suspecting that there is a specific unit that is being sent out there apart from the ordinary deployment to go and commit atrocities,” he said.

On Wednesday, July 17, Kanja said the police had received intelligence about a plot by criminal elements to infiltrate the demonstrations planned for Thursday, July 18, and continue causing destruction.

The acting IG pointed out that the demonstration organisers’ lack of leadership had made it impossible for the police to enforce safety protocols.

Kanja stated that this had necessitated the need to ban the protests in Nairobi Central Business District and its surroundings until further notice…CONTINUE READING>>
