While in Abuja, I met a guy who helped me find a job and I stayed with him. I was able to support my mom and siblings financially for more than two years.
During this time, I discovered I was pregnant. If he had asked me to terminate the pregnancy, I would have considered it, given that I was the sole provider for my family. However, he asked me to keep the baby, and I agreed.
Along the way, things took a turn for the worse. He had an accident, lost his job, and had to stay with a friend until he could get back on his feet. I had to return home to my mom while pregnant. I stayed with her and eventually had my baby.
She sent me little money for food, but didn’t send anything for me to leave the hospital. I had to sort that out myself. He didn’t buy anything for the baby and didn’t come to see us, despite promising to do so.
He kept sending small amounts of money weekly until my baby was seven months old. After that, he stopped sending anything and wouldn’t answer my calls.
I informed his family about the situation, but they said they couldn’t intervene because he never introduced me to his father properly. We only communicated over the phone.
Life became difficult. When my baby turned one, I left him with my mom and returned to Abuja, but I couldn’t find work. I became desperate and ended up sleeping in various places. I even called my baby’s father to let him know I was in Abuja, but he remained unchanged.
I confided in a schoolmate about my situation, and she introduced me to the hook-up business. It took me about eight months before I agreed to join.
I am ashamed to admit this, but I am involved in the hook-up business. I need help. The irony is, I can’t save money because of my family responsibilities, including caring for my baby.
