Thiago Silva, a defender for Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain, stated he is inspired by Zinedine Zidane and intends to retire before he becomes “embarrassing.”

Thiago Silva has participated in each of his nation’s three Copa America games thus far. Last season, he made 39 appearances for Ligue 1 champions PSG in all competitions.

Silva argues that even if Zidane’s retirement does not appear to be near, the Frenchman’s choice to hang up his boots after the 2006 World Cup at the age of 34 is a shining example of leaving the game at its pinnacle.

The 34-year-old defender told PSG’s official magazine, “I hope I can decide to give up before my legs give up on me.

“I don’t want to feel unprepared on the pitch one day and believe that players can simply defeat me in duels.

“I’m glad that my career has been successful, and I want to compete at the very top of my game.

“I liked the way Zinedine Zidane finished his playing days, immediately following the World Cup. I’ll have to decide to stop at some point as well.”

Silva thinks he would be more effective as an assistant coach than Zidane, who is the head coach of Real Madrid.

I don’t see myself as a leader, he said. “I want to be on the field, maybe as a coach or an assistant.”

“I plan to attend as many games as I can. Whether French, Dutch, or Italian, offensive or defensive, I want to know the proficiency levels of various football schools.

I want to be a coach someday, so I’ll draw on my playing experience.

When Brazil’s Copa America campaign resumes on Friday against Paraguay in the quarterfinals, Silva can be counted on to start.
