Speaking on Wednesday, during the commissioning of Kimuka Power Sub Station, Kajiado West, Kajiado County, the head of state stated that despite the challenges occasioned by the withdrawal of the Finance Bill, grievances of the JSS teachers will be considered.
“I want to tell all our JSS teachers, despite all the challenges in the Finance Bill, we are going to make sure that we confirm all teachers under JSS before the end of this year so that they can teach knowing that as we agreed, they will serve under permanent and pensionable terms.”
The assurance from the head of state comes amid highly escalated concerns and uproar on the plight of JSS teachers under the new curriculum which is the competence-based curriculum (CBC).
In June, the JSS strike prompted the Budget and Appropriation Committee to instruct the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to hire all the Junior Secondary School teachers who have been working under an internship program on permanent and pensionable terms.
The Budget and Appropriation Committee chairperson stated that the government had allocated enough funds for the project in the 2024/2025 Financial Year.
Nyoro, who doubles up as the Kiharu Member of Parliament, directed the TSC to hire all the 46,000 interns who have been working under the program.
“I can assure this house that there are now sufficient resources to confirm the JSS interns into permanent and pensionable terms.”
He exuded confidence over the hiring after the passing of the financial budget as opposed to in January 2025 as earlier proposed.
“From the floor of this house, I want to request the TSC as you appropriate this money kindly do not wait until January 2025 to confirm the interns, Please hasten their confirmation as soon as the budget is passed.”
Adding onto the 46,000 already in the TSC register, the head of state has temporarily suspended plans to hire 20,000 more teachers until next year with a view to align the education sector.
This comes after Junior Secondary School intern teachers staged a three-week protest just before Madaraka Day.
They later agreed to end their strike after signing a return-to-work formula on 1st June 2024.
The agreement reached on Madaraka Day, promised to see the teachers return to work. Among the concessions made by TSC was the withdrawal of all show-cause letters issued to teachers for their participation in the strike.
