Higher Education Principle Secretary Beatrice Inyangala instructed all universities to recall admission letters for the ministry to determine the amount parents are supposed to pay in the new funding model.

In a press statement on Monday, August 5, Inyangala extended the HELB application deadline for 2023 KCSE students joining universities.

“We are pleased to announce that the application process has been extended by ten days, closing on August 15, 2024.

“Under the New Funding Model, government funding will be allocated based on individual student need,” read the statement in part.

Inyangala noted that after the application window closes, starting August 19, 2024, parents and guardians will be informed of the fees households should pay.

According to the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), 153,275 students who took the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2023 will join universities starting in August 2024.

The PS insisted that HELB will support only those who apply for funding. The application for first-time students under the new model opened in June 2024.

Students are required to apply for scholarships and loans based on the university programme in which they are enrolled.

HELB said about 79,038 university students had applied for loans and scholarships as of August 5, 2024.

However, 74,237 university students were yet to apply for funding a week before the application deadline.

HELB said that under the new financing model, all students in universities and TVT institutions are illegible to apply.

Ringera affirmed that the minors only need their KCSE index number and a Post Bank account. Minors are being enabled to apply using KCSE index number. Equally, Post Bank has provided a solution for banking services to minors to ensure inclusivity,” said Ringera.

Under the new funding model, students experiencing financial difficulties will be exempt from paying tuition fees  and other related expenses. The government scholarship will be based on the actual cost of the programme and the student’s financial needs...CONTINUE READING>>
