As recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the Holy Bible, Jesus Christ was mocked, scorned, and tortured in the praetorium.

Condemned to death by Pontius Pilate, he carried his Cross to Calvary, was nailed to the cross, and hung between two common criminals. Christ Jesus died on the Cross to redeem mankind, to save us from our sins because of his love for us.

He suffered an indescribable end, recalled by the Church on Good Friday of Holy Week. On this holy day Christians around the world meditate on the Passion of Christ by reflecting on his Seven Words on the Cross.

What were the seven last words said by Jesus Christ on the cross?

Jesus Christ made seven final statements during his last hours on the cross. These phrases are held dear by followers of Christ because they offer a glimpse into the depth of his suffering to accomplish redemption.

As much as possible, based on the approximate sequence of events portrayed in the Gospels, these seven last words of Jesus are presented here in chronological order.

1. “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34).

2. “You will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).

3. “Woman, behold your son!” (John 19:26-27).

4. “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46).

5. “I thirst!” (John 19:28).

6. “It is finished!” (John 19:30).

7. “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit’” (Luke 23:46).

After hanging on the cross for hours, Jesus finally gave up his own life. As was prophesied, three days later God brought Jesus back to life, and now He reigns in glory – seated at the right hand of God!
