The four-day excursion to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s stronghold proved enlightening for Gachagua, who received a warm welcome despite his history of criticizing Odinga. This experience has led him to appreciate the unity fostered by respect for regional leadership.

Upon returning to his Mount Kenya base, Gachagua sought to apply these lessons by calling for solidarity and respect for leadership within his political backyard. His efforts to consolidate power in the region, following former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s retirement in 2022, have faced challenges from local politicians.

Speaking in Mikumbune, Gachagua expressed dismay at what he perceives as internal resistance, contrasting it unfavourably with the unity he witnessed in Luo Nyanza. The Deputy President also used this platform to defend former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, praising his performance before the recent cabinet reshuffle.

Linturi was among several ministers dismissed when President Ruto announced a comprehensive cabinet overhaul on July 11, 2024. In a move to enhance government efficiency and accountability, Gachagua presided over the launch of two new information systems at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.

The Presidential Directives Management Information System and the Foreign Travel Information Management System are designed to track the implementation of presidential directives and monitor official foreign travel, respectively.

Gachagua emphasized the importance of these systems in maintaining the President’s authority and dignity. The Deputy President’s agenda also included a visit to Mombasa County, where he engaged in various activities, including a meeting with Kenya Tea Development Authority directors.

During his stay, Gachagua highlighted the positive impact of his previous interventions, citing the improved circumstances of Mama Asha Sidi Chengo, a local resident he had assisted in April. This personal touch aligns with the Kenya Kwanza administration’s stated goal of improving citizens’ lives.
