Manchester City’s Foden, who was recently honoured as PFA Player of the Year, was called up by interim England manager Lee Carsley but did not join the squad due to illness.

Chelsea’s Palmer and Aston Villa’s Watkins reported to St George’s Park but have since returned to their clubs to continue recovering from ongoing issues, according to the Football Association.

England is set to face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Saturday, September 7, before hosting Finland at Wembley three days later. These matches will be the team’s first since their Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain on July 14.

Following that loss, Gareth Southgate resigned as England manager, with under-21s coach Lee Carsley stepping in as interim manager on August 9.

In naming his squad for the Nations League games, Carsley has included Angel Gomes, Tino Livramento, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Noni Madueke.

Gomes, a winger for Lille, Newcastle defender Livramento, Nottingham Forest midfielder Gibbs-White, and Chelsea forward Madueke all previously played under Carsley during his tenure as England Under-21 manager.
