The minister confirmed this when he spoke with the state house media immediately after the federal executive council meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in attendance on Wednesday in Abuja.

Lai Mohammed explained that the decision to postpone the census was a result of the shift in the gubernatorial and state assembly elections by the Independent national electoral commission (INEC) from March 11 to 18.

He also announced that the Council approved N2.8 billion for the National Population Commission (NPC) in order to obtain software for the implementation of the census.

“A memo from the national population commission was presented, which was for the procurement of software that enabled them to carry out the census in May this year.

I believe that due to the rescheduling of the elections, they cannot start the census as planned.

The Council approved a contract for N2.8 billion for the procurement of software for the census, he said.
