During France’s time in the competition, no player in the tournament recovered possession more times than Koundé. France failed to ignite as an attacking force but their defensive strength carried them into the final four. The Barcelona defender helped France to four clean sheets and pushed forward down the right.

Marc Guéhi may have received more praise but that is, in part, because he is new to this England team. Stones has been a key member of the side for years and he has demonstrated, once again, why he remains one of the first names on the team sheet. Consistent, composed, reliable – and perhaps England’s best player in the final.

Described by some French pundits as their most important player, Saliba underlined his status as one of the finest centre-backs in Europe. Some are now arguing he is the best defender in the world. Given the quality of his performances, it is strange to think that Didier Deschamps had pre-tournament concerns about Saliba’s readiness.

has been one of the stories of the summer. The 25-year-old has endured a difficult few years with Chelsea in the Premier League but has shown technical quality, energy and a fierce competitive spirit during his time in Germany. He produced the decisive cross for the winning goal in the final.

The best controlling midfielder in the world. Perhaps even the best player in the world? Rodri is to Spain what he is to Manchester City: the technical leader of the team, and the man through whom everything flows. He knows when to play fast and when to play slow. A shame for him that he was injured in the final, but he more than made his mark in Germany.

Playing alongside the majestic Rodri, Ruiz has been granted the freedom to push forward into attacking positions and has been fundamental to Spain’s thrilling attacking style. He constantly passed forward, and ran into dangerous areas when the opportunity presented itself. He ended the tournament with two goals and two assists.

The teenage sensation in Spain’s attack and. Yamal ended the tournament with the most assists of any player, with four, and scored perhaps the finest individual goal of the summer with his long-range effort in the semi-final against France. Turned 17 only on Saturday.

With three goals and two assists in six appearances, Olmo could justifiably claim to be the most productive attacking player of the tournament. The 26-year-old has excelled as a starter and a substitute, demonstrating a precious ability to adapt to the pace of the game from the bench.

From the first minute of the first game, Williams was a threat for Spain. An old-school winger, the Spaniard wants to run at his full-back at every opportunity and is happy to wait for his chance high up the pitch. An enormous talent, and still just 22 years old. His goal in the final was reward for an excellent summer.
