The Red Devils barely got past Fulham in their opening game thanks to a Joshua Zirkzee debut goal. It has been downhill from there, with back-to-back losses to Brighton and Liverpool.

The 3-0 loss to Arne Slot’s side at home was damaging, with the controlling owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, spotted with a frustrated look in the stands.

Ten Hag is set to get a slight reprieve and a step away from the rigours of the Premier League during this international window.

As MEN reports, he has taken up a coaching role at Mark van der Maarel’s testimonial match at his former club, Utrecht.

Van der Maarel is said to have requested that his former coach be present during the match. Ten Hag managed the former defender between 2015 and 2017 before joining Ajax, where he made his name. Van der Maarel retired after spending 17 seasons at the club, as captured by Transfermarkt.

Ten Hag will be hoping to return to England reinvigorated ahead of their back-to-back away trips to Southampton and Crystal Palace, with a Carabao Cup tie sandwiched in between.
