This comes as the university welcomes 2024 first year students, including the privately funded and those under the Higher Education Loans Board.

In the changes, fees for co-habiting within the hostels, visiting schools, visitors and surcharges for damages caused by students have either been doubled, introduced or significantly increased.

“The University Council at its 198-meeting held on Friday 2nd August 2024, revised accommodation fees for visiting schools, visitors and surcharges for damages caused by students in the hostels.

“Students and other stakeholders are advised to take note as follows,” the statement read in part.

Charges for co-habiting has been increased from normal room rates to Ksh10,000 each, while the penalty for running a business in the room has been increased from Ksh3,000 to Ksh5,000.

Students will be required to pay Ksh4,500 for a table, an increase from Ksh3,000. Additionally, charges for a chair has increased from Ksh500 to Ksh2,000.

Also, students will pay Ksh2,000 for curtains, an increase from ksh1,500. Non-clearance fee has been increased from ksh500 to Ksh1,000 while the price of Padlock Mindy has been increased from Ksh2,000 to Ksh2,500.

Padlock tricycle will now cost students Ksh1,500 and increase from Ksh1,000 while a socket and switch will cost students Ksh1,000, an increase from Ksh450 and Ksh350 respectively.

Having 2 ft and 4 ft LED lights tubes in the hostels will cost students Ksh1,000 an increase from Ksh250 and Ksh300. A 5 ft Led tube will cost Ksh1,500.

Furthermore, the cost of bulb holders has increased from Ksh100 to Ksh1,000.

Students who boil water in the hostels will pay Ksh2,000 after confiscation, an increase from the Ksh1,000 penalty. On the other hand, students found cooking in the rooms will be evicted and pay a penalty of Ksh5,000. The eviction fee has been introduced.

Students found pirating in the rooms will pay Ksh10,000 an increase from normal room charges, while those found hosting will be penalized Ksh10,000, a fee increase from the previous half a room price penalty.

Also, subletting a room now attracts a Ksh10,000 penalty. Tapping in the room will attract Ksh2,000 penalty, an increase from ksh1,000.

If found dismantling a bed, a student will pay a penalty of Ksh2,000, an increase from Ksh1,500 while those found with a broken windowpane will pay a penalty of Ksh2,000.

On the other hand, students will now pay Ksh500 for a waste-paper basket, Ksh500 for a hand broom, Ksh4,000 for a waste bin bucket, and pay a penalty of Ksh5,000 for defaced walls.

Having guests from a visiting school will attract a Ksh400 penalty, doubled from the previous rate while having non students over will attract a Ksh500 penalty…CONTINUE READING>>
