The inquiry, which focused on financial transactions during the 2013/2014 fiscal year, found no evidence of misconduct or misappropriation of public funds.

The investigation was initiated following a complaint received by the EACC, which alleged that substantial
double payments had been made for renovation works on the Deputy President’s Karen residence during the 2013/2014 financial year.

These renovations were said to have been previously completed in the 2012/2013 financial year, raising concerns about possible financial irregularities.

According to the EACC’s quarterly report, the inquiry revealed that the project initially targeted the Vice-President’s residence and was executed by two different contractors.

The first contractor’s agreement was terminated due to non-performance, prompting the appointment of a second contractor who completed the work.

However, in 2013, after the Deputy President’s intended move into the residence, he recommended additional changes, leading to a comprehensive renovation of the entire house.

The Ministry of Lands and Housing, through its Directorate of Public Works, was responsible for overseeing and implementing the renovations.

The EACC’s investigation determined that the modifications and renovations recommended by the Deputy President were justified and necessary.

Crucially, the investigation found no evidence of double payments to the contractors, as initially alleged.

“The renovations were justified, and no public funds were lost,” stated the EACC in their report.

The findings have been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with a recommendation to close the inquiry file.

This clearance by the EACC brings an end to concerns regarding financial mismanagement in the Office of the Deputy President during the period in question.
