The incident which happened in the middle of a gang-infested region occurred during Kenya’s first engagement with gangs in the Caribbean nation.

Before Wednesday, Kenyan police who had been deployed to Haiti had been confined to guarding critical infrastructure and patrolling the streets without making contact with the gangs.

Immediately the military truck broke down, and mechanics within the police ranks quickly swung into action and started repairing the truck.

The military truck was repaired with no major incident as a group of Kenyan and Haitian police surrounded it to deter the gangs who control almost 80 per cent of the capital.

Haitian citizens could be seen watching the truck being repaired in a visible nonchalant disinterest. The Kenyan police had eight armoured trucks before one broke down. There was no communication that it would continue being used for operations after the incident.

The trucks were donated by the United States government and are part of Pentagon stockpile. After that, Kenyan and Haitian police officers exchanged fire with armed gangs in central Port-ay-Prince.

This was the first exchange of live fire since Kenya deployed officers to Haiti last month and came a day after Kenya deployed a second contingent to the Caribbean nation.

Additionally, it was the first major patrol of the central part of the city as in the past, the patrols were confined to the capital’s main square.
